This is the first visit to Israel by a high-ranking US official since President Joe Biden took office.

Mr. Austin said the US’s alliance with Israel is crucial to regional security.

Israeli defense chief Benny Gantz said Israel sees the US as a comprehensive partner and will cooperate closely with the US in dealing with Iran.

Israel objects to the US’s intention to return to the JCPOA, the nuclear deal signed between Iran and 6 world powers in 2015. Israel says the deal will allow Iran to develop nuclear weapons and threaten Israel’s security.
