(VOVWORLD) - US media reported Wednesday that Democrats have reclaimed control of the US Senate by winning 2 runoff races in Georgia.

Democratic candidates Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff won both Georgia Senate seats, defeating Republicans Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue two months after Joe Biden became the first Democrat presidential candidate to carry the state since 1992.
Warnock, who serves as pastor for the same Atlanta church where civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. preached, will be Georgia’s first African-American Senator. Ossoff will be Georgia's first Jewish senator and, at 33 years old, the Senate's youngest member.
The results came just hours after violent supporters of President Donald Trump breached the US Capitol as lawmakers were meeting to confirm President-elect Joe Biden's win. President Trump later posted a video message on Twitter calling on supporters to leave the Capitol, but continued to make unsubstantiated claims that Democrats had stolen the election.
