In an interview with World Politics magazine, Gregory Poling, director of the Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, said there is no evidence that Vietnam has illegally constructed islands which would change the status quo in the East Sea.
He added that China’s accelerating illegal construction of artificial islands in the East Sea has alarmed the US and those countries who claim sovereignty in the area. Mr. Poling said Vietnam's sovereignty claim over Hoang Sa and Truong Sa archipelagos is in line with the UNCLOS.
