US, North Korea likely to resume nuclear talks later this year

(VOVWORLD) - The US and North Korea are likely to hold one or two rounds of working-level nuclear talks before the end of the year, the deadline set by North Korea for the US to make new proposals for denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula.

South Korea’s Institute for National Security Strategy (INSS) said on Thursday that the US will try to revive negotiations to keep the nuclear issue under control. President Trump needs diplomatic achievements prior to the presidential election in 2020, it said. INSS noted the US wants to persuade Kim Jong-un not to warn the world that North Korea is on “a new path” in his upcoming New Year speech.
