US offers more help for mine action in Vietnam

(VOVWORLD) - The US has provided 150 million USD for mine action in Vietnam and will continue joining Vietnam to build a future without landmines andother unexploded ordnance in the country.

The statement was made by Colonel Thomas Steveson, the US Defense Attache to Vietnam, at a workshop on information management in mine action which opened in Hanoi on Monday.

Nguyen Van Nghiep, Deputy Derector of the Vietnam National Mine Action Center, said the workshop, which is sponsored by the US and Norwegian People’s Aid Vietnam, will contribute to the National Action Program for the settlement of post-war bomb and mine consequences. 

The US has generously provided us with financial and technical support and equipment for mine action. We are working with them to develop human resources for mine action in Vietnam and UN peace keeping missions,” said Nghiep.

On this occasion, the US Embassy provided equipment to help expand capacity development for information management in mine action in Vietnam.
