(VOVWORLD) - US President Donald Trump on Monday signed an executive order re-imposing sanctions on Iran, continuing to apply maximum economic pressure on the Iranian regime.
Trump said the US is open to reaching a more comprehensive deal that addresses Iran’s ballistic-missile program and its support for terrorism. Officials said President Trump is willing to meet Iranian leaders any time.
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said Iran will not negotiate with the US until Washington proves its reliability after unilaterally withdrawing from the previous nuclear deal and re-imposing sanctions on Iran. He said he always backs diplomacy but negotiations during sanctions make no sense.
In another development, the EU and three of its heavyweight members, Britain, France and Germany, said they will maintain economic ties with Tehran. EU Foreign Policy chief Federica Mogherini, who is currently on an official trip to Asia, issued a joint statement with the foreign ministers of Britain, France and Germany saying they "are determined to protect European economic operators engaged in legitimate business with Iran."
The joint statement called the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), a key element of the global nuclear non-proliferation architecture, crucial for the security of Europe, the region, and the world.
