At a meeting on Thursday with the Republicans, President Trump said he would get involved in negotiations for many trade agreements. The statement was made as President Donald Trump’s administration is preparing for a bilateral summit with Japan, the second biggest economy in the TPP.
The same day, an US official said President Trump is accelerating the effort to reach a bilateral trade agreement with Japan to replace the TPP.
Earlier, speaking to the Diet, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was also open to a possibility for a negotiation on an FTA with the US after the US’s withdrawal from the TPP. A meeting between two US and Japanese leaders is scheduled to take place on February 10.
