US State Secretary optimistic about peace plan for Ukraine

(VOVWORLD) -US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said “tremendous progress” was made in Sunday talks with Ukrainian officials in Geneva, Switzerland.

“We’ve really moved forward, so I feel very optimistic that we’re going to get there in a very reasonable period of time, very soon,” Rubio told reporters at the US mission in Geneva.

The final agreement on a 28-point pace plan for Ukraine championed by US President Donald Trump will require sign-off from US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Russia will also need to sign off on the plan.

Andriy Yermak, head of Ukraine’s delegation, echoed Rubio’s sentiments, telling reporters that they made “very good progress” and were “moving forward to the just and lasting peace Ukrainian people deserve”.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of the Army Dan Driscoll, special envoy Steve Witkoff, and President Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner were negotiating in Geneva, Switzerland, with top Ukrainian officials on the peace plan approved by President Trump.

The 28-point plan faced criticism from Ukraine and its European allies who said it was a major concession to Russia. Neither Ukraine nor Europe were consulted by the US in advance.
