US-Africa Leaders' summit opens
(VOVWORLD) - US President Joe Biden and 50 African leaders gathered in Washington on Tuesday for the US-Africa Leaders' Summit to discuss regional and global issues including energy, financial services, climate change, food security and health care.
President Biden will demonstrate the US’s support for the African Union joining the G20 group as a permanent member and for an AU member country to join the UN Security Council.
The US pledged to invest 55 billion USD in Africa over the next three years to address core challenges. On the occasion, more than 300 American and African businesses will discuss cooperation in major areas.
On the opening day, President Biden established the President’s Advisory Council in charge of cooperation with Africa. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said the summit reflected the US’s policy for Africa and the AU’s 2063 Agenda, which included 14 initiatives that the AU approved in 2013.
This is the first time Biden has met African leaders since he took office last year.
