(VOVworld) –Hostile plots to cause riots in Venezuela have been prevented and peace has been restored in the country thanks to the coordinated efforts of the government, security forces and people, according to President Nicolas Maduro. After President Maduro’s televised speech, Venezuela's Attorney General, Luisa Ortega Diaz, reiterated that Caracas respects and protects the people’s basic rights and would strictly punish individuals and organizations that violate those rights.

Ms. Ortega said that the Public Ministry has established a special taskforce to prevent human rights’ violations with members being experts and officials from police agencies. Such statements were made after opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez gave himself up to the authorities after charges of murder and the dissemination of terrorism through riots had been made against him.
Demonstrations in Venezuela over the past 2 weeks have claimed 3 lives and led to more than 60 injuries.
