Participating in the UNSC is consistent with Vietnam’s foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, multilateralism, and diversification, Mr. Minh said, adding that Vietnam will promote dialogue, de-escalation, avoiding confrontation, and seeking fair and equable solutions to issues that threaten regional and global peace and security.

Vietnam will work to promote respect for international law and the UN Charter, especially the basic principles of sovereignty and equality between countries, as well as respect for independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and socio-political regimes, no interference in another’s internal affairs, peaceful settlement of all disputes, and not using or threatening to use force, Mr. Minh said. 

The Deputy PM stressed Vietnam’s advocacy of the spirit of “partnership for sustainable peace,” which focuses on conflict prevention, peace building, post-conflict reconstruction, and enhancement of multilateralism and multilateral institutions, especially the UN and regional organizations.

This month Vietnam will preside over more than 30 meetings and debates, and the Council will decide on peace-keeping operations and political missions in Cyprus, Yemen, and Libya, and elsewhere. There will be two major meetings, one to promote the observance of the UN Charter, and one to forge cooperation between the UN and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Mr. Minh said.
