Vietnam chairs UNSC meetings on chemical weapons in Syria, Mali situation

(VOVWORLD) - Vietnam, as President of the UN Security Council for April, chaired a regular meeting of the UN Security Council on Tuesday to listen to and discuss the report of the UN Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for Disarmament Affairs Izumi Nakamitsu on chemical weapons in Syria.

Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy, Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the UN, said Vietnam condemns the use of chemical weapons and emphasizes the importance of fully implementing the Chemical Weapons Convention to achieve the goal of ridding the world of chemical weapons.
The ambassador encouraged the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) and Syrian authorities to cooperate in an earnest and constructive manner to resolve the remaining issues. He stressed the need to strengthen cooperation and unity within the UN Security Council and the OPCW conference, which is scheduled to take place in the Netherlands later this month.
The UNSC met online Tuesday to discuss the situation in Mali. This was the first public meeting chaired by Vietnam as President of the UN Security Council for April. Addressing the meeting, Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy acknowledged the efforts made by Mali’s transitional Government and related parties and strongly condemned the recent attacks against civilians and UN peacekeepers.
He called for greater efforts to implement the 2015 Peace Agreement and the law on international humanitarian and human rights, including not obstructing humanitarian activities and protecting civilians, especially women and children. He praised the efforts made by the UN, the African Union, and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to support the peace process in Mali and the G5 Sahel Joint Force against terrorism.
