All eight Vietnamese students are from the Hanoi–Amsterdam High School for the Gifted. The gold medal went to 11th-grader Nguyen Manh Quan who was also honored with an Absolute Winner prize for his highest scores. The 2019 Olympiad drew contestants from 42 countries.

All medalists were honored at an event at the Vietnamese Embassy in Hungary on Sunday, where Ambassador Nguyen Tien Thuc said he hopes to see more young Vietnamese contribute to science.

The IOAA was established in Thailand in 2006. It was a joint initiative of Thailand, Indonesia, Iran, China, and Poland, with the aim of popularizing astronomy among high school students and fostering friendship and cooperation among young astronomers around the world.
