Vietnam elects first female top legislator

(VOVworld) - Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan was elected Chairwoman of the National Assembly and the National Electoral Council (NEC) on Thursday.

The Assembly quickly adopted a unanimous resolution on her election. Madam Ngan said at her swearing-in ceremony: “in front of the national flag, the National Assembly, the people, and voters nationwide, I vow my resolute loyalty to the nation, the people, and the Constitution. I promise to exert efforts to fulfill well the tasks assigned by the Party, State, and people. From now on I will strictly abide by the missions and authorities of a leader of the National Assembly and work closely with the NA Standing Committee to implement the tasks of the highest-level representative body of the people”.

Nguyen Sinh Hung, the outgoing NA Chairperson, said: “the NA acknowledges the oath of Chairperson Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan. This is the first time in the Vietnamese National Assembly’s history that we have a female leader of the legislature.”

Born in 1954, Madam Ngan holds a master’s degree in economics and a bachelor of politics. She has held key positions including Deputy Finance Minister, Hai Duong provincial Party Committee Secretary, Minister of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs, and NA Vice Chairwoman.

She was a member of the Politburo of the 11th Party Central Committee. At the 12th National Party Congress this year, she was selected to the Party Central Committee and then to the Politburo.
