Vietnam emphasizes aviation, maritime safety and security in East Sea

(VOVWORLD) -The ASEAN Defense Senior Officials’ Meeting Plus opened in Phnom Penh on Wednesday with the participation of senior officials from the 10 ASEAN countries and eight partners, namely Russia, the US, India, China, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Australia, and New Zealand.

Addressing the meeting, Deputy Defense Minister Hoang Xuan Chien hailed the gravity of conventional security threats with complicated development besides non-conventional security threats.

Vietnam persistently pursued a foreign policy of independence, self-determination, peace, friendship, cooperation and development while calling for settlement of disputes by peaceful means based on international law, the UN Charter and key ASEAN principles, Mr.Chien said.

He added aviation and navigation security and safety in the East Sea matter to regional countries and the ASEAN, emphasizing the necessity of an early finalization of a Code of Conduct for Parties in the East Sea.

Vietnam consistently pursued dispute resolution by peaceful means based on international law, including the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, according to the Deputy Defense Minister.
