Vietnam, France pledge stronger bilateral ties

(VOVWORLD) - Vietnam and France have great potential to boost cooperation in sustainable development, energy, health care, and legislation, according to the two countries’ top legislators.

During their talks in Hanoi on Thursday, National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue and French Senate President Gérard Larcher, who is on an official visit to Vietnam, agreed to work closely to promote ties and at multilateral forums including the Inter-Parliamentary Union, the Asia Europe Parliamentary Partnership (ASEP), and the  Parliamentary Assembly of the Francophonie (APF) towards the realization of SGD goals.

Chairman Hue urged the two sides to strengthen delegation exchanges and boost parliamentary cooperation. He said Vietnam always attaches importance to its relationship with France and wishes to deepen the bilateral strategic partnership, on political party channels, parliamentary and government diplomacy, and especially cultural and people-to-people exchanges.

French Senate President Gérard Larcher affirmed Vietnam plays an important role in France’s external policy and agreed to Chairman Hue’s stance on the East Sea issue. He said involved parties need to uphold the UN Charter, the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, international law and settle disputes by peaceful means.

After the talks, the two leaders co-chaired the launch of activities to celebrate 50th anniversary of Vietnam-France diplomatic ties.

Mr. Hue said: "2023 is a special year for bilateral relations. We will celebrate the 50th anniversary of our diplomatic ties and 10th anniversary of the strategic partnership. I believe that with political determination of the two countriesleaders and efforts by the two peoples, we will further deepen our strategic partnership. This will be an occasion for the two countries to demonstrate their spirit of cooperation for the benefits of the two peoples and for peace, cooperation, and development in the region and the world."
