He said a captain who fishes illegally will have his captain’s licence revoked and his vessel banned from fishing.

Mr. Tuan said inter-sector working groups have been established to help monitor illegal fishing, which has resulted in fewer violations.

He said a delegation led by Minister Nguyen Xuan Cuong has visited the EU to discuss what Vietnam has done to address the European Commission’s “yellow card”.

Vietnam received a “yellow card” from the EC because it failed to meet standards for IUU fishing last October and was given six months to rectify the situation.

Deputy Minister Tuan said an EC delegation will visit Vietnam this April to examine the work so far.
