President Truong Tan Sang said the establishment of the strategic partnership between Vietnam and Italy in January 2013 has helped to strengthen bilateral cooperation in various areas, especially in politics, economics, trade and investment. The consultation and dialogue mechanism between their ministries and agencies has proved effective, giving the two countries plenty of opportunities for broader cooperation, particularly after Vietnam-EU free trade agreement (FTA) negotiations conclude later this year. President Truong Tan Sang proposed that the two sides continue high-level exchange visits, increase cooperation, in areas such as infrastructure, energy, and manufacturing, establish and convene an Intergovernmental Committee for economic cooperation, and implement action programmes for cultural and educational cooperation. He said he hopes Italy will continue to support Vietnam in increasing comprehensive cooperation with the EU, especially during the next six months when Italy resumes the EU Presidency. President Truong Tan Sang assured his guest that Vietnam, an active ASEAN member and the coordinator of ASEAN-EU relations, is ready to help Italy strengthen cooperation with ASEAN countries.

Renzi praised Vietnam’s Renewal achievements and said Italy wants to foster the strategic partnership with Vietnam. He told President Truong Tan Sang that Italy is ready to serve as a bridge linking Vietnam and the EU. He expressed concern about the recent tensions in the East Sea and said he hopes the parties concerned will settle the issue in accordance with international law.
