(VOVworld) - Vietnamese Ambassador to the UN Le Hoai Trung says that Vietnam is actively preparing to join the UN Peace-Keeping Force early next year. Trung told reporters on the sidelines of the ongoing Diplomatic Conference in Hanoi that this reflects Vietnam’s decisive to play a more important role in the international arena. Ambassador Trung said:

Vietnam’s long-time policy is to support the UN’s peace-keeping activities for the common benefit of countries involved, for peace and security. In Vietnam’s viewpoint, the UN’s peace-keeping activities are a tool to maintain international peace and security. For Vietnam, a country with a peace-loving tradition, it’s consistent to contribute to global peace and solidarity. Vietnam is preparing and learning ways to make a large contribution.

Ambassador Trung said Vietnam is focusing its preparations on the training of staff officers, medical officers, engineers, and UN observers. Vietnam will send a delegation to visit a UN mission in action.

Currently, more than 115 countries have joined the UN Peace-keeping Force in 15 missions around the world. Bangladesh is the country with the largest number of personnel – more than 8,000 soldiers and officers - followed by Pakistan and India.
