Vietnam reaffirms strong support for UN

(VOVWORLD) - Deputy Prime Minister Pham Binh Minh on Friday underlined the importance of international solidarity and multilateralism with the UN playing the central role.

Chairing a ceremony in New York to mark Vietnam’s National Day and 45 years of Vietnam’s UN membership, Mr. Minh reiterated Vietnam’s strong support and commitment to the UN’s role in leading and coordinating multilateral efforts to respond to global challenges. He called on the international community to back Vietnam’s candidacy for the UN Human Rights Council’s membership for the 2023-2025 tenure.

During a meeting with UN Secretary General Antonió Guterres the same day, Deputy PM Minh said that Vietnam is working hard to honor its commitment to net zero emissions by 2050. He called for UN support for the building of the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP).

Secretary General Guterres said the UN will continue to support Vietnam’s green, sustainable development and just transition, especially in terms of financial access.

The same day, Deputy PM Minh met 77th UN General Assembly President Csaba Korosi who praised Vietnam's contributions and its active role in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals. Vietnam is a role model of economic growth associated with environmental protection, Korosi stressed.

Mr. Minh also met Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, Sierra Leon’s Foreign Minister David Francis, and other senior officials.
