Vietnam to boost COVID-19 vaccination for children 5-11

(VOVWORLD) - The Ministry of Health has proposed buying 21.9 million COVID-19 vaccine doses for children aged 5-11 and the first batch of Moderna vaccine will be received as early as May 10, said Deputy Minister of Health Do Xuan Tuyen at the Government’s regular press meeting Monday.

The Australian and Dutch Embassies have promised to help Vietnam access COVID-19 vaccine for children. The Ministry of Health has met with the Australian Embassy and Pfizer, who agreed to deliver vaccines to Vietnam as soon as possible. Both Pfizer and Moderna produce vaccines that have been authorized for children.

In regard to Vietnam’s vaccine production, Mr. Tuyen said Vietnam has 3 vaccine candidates including Nano Covax, Covivac, and ARCT-154, which are being developed in Vietnam.

“All three candidates are in the clinical trial stage. The vaccine research units need to submit dossiers for licensing at the request of the National Ethic Council and License Advisory Council. If eligible, the vaccines will be licensed by the Ministry of Health.”

Vaccines require a very high safety assessment of immediate and long-term adverse effects, Mr. Tuyen said, noting that a vaccine will never be authorized without adequate research and evaluation.
