Vietnam, UNODA step up cooperation for nuclear non-proliferation

(VOVWORLD) - Vietnam is committed to promoting multilateralism, building consensus and ensuring a balanced approach to the three pillars of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), Vietnam’s Permanent Representative to the UN and other international organizations in Vienna said Thursday. The pillars include non-proliferation, disarmament, and the peaceful use of nuclear energy.

During a meeting with Rebecca Jovin, chief of the UN Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA), Ambassador Vu Le Thai Hoang said Vietnam hopes to work with UNODA in preparation for the 11th NPT Review Conference, scheduled for April-May 2026 in New York.

He proposed establishing regular communication channels between UNODA and Vietnam’s missions in New York, Vienna, and Geneva, providing technical and logistical support for Vietnam’s presidency, and coordinating in specialized workshops and forums related to the treaty’s implementation.

Jovin said she is confident that Ambassador Do Hung Viet, Vietnam’s Permanent Representative to the UN, will do a good job of leading the review conference. She pledged that UNODA will work closely with Vietnam to organise regional consultations and will provide full support for Mr. Viet’s activities in Vienna throughout his presidency.
