Vietnam urges for stronger Mekong-Ganges cooperation for post-pandemic recovery

(VOVWORLD) - Senior officials of Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and India gathered Monday at the Mekong-Ganga Senior Officials' Meeting (MGC) in Phnom Penh to discuss ways to accelerate implementation of the MGC Action Plan for the 2019-2022 period.

Participants focused on expanding the India-Myanmar-Thailand expressway to Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam. They will also give attention to developing human resources in IT, digital transformation, innovation, and advanced science; improving the health care system; and vaccine research and development.

They discussed enhancing mutual understanding among the peoples of MGC countries through cultural and sports exchanges and tourism and communication activities.

The Vietnamese delegation proposed Mekong-Ganga Cooperation (MGC) in the post-COVID-19 period, concentrating on promoting economic recovery; and helping micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) participate in global supply chains. They also suggested speeding up digital transformation; developing IT infrastructure toward smart tourism; strengthening community health; ensuring equitable, sustainable access to vaccines, medicines, and medical equipment; and sharing information and experience in sustainable management of water resources.
