Vietnam, US promote defense ties

(VOVworld) – Deputy Defense Minister, Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Chi Vinh received in Hanoi on Monday the US’s Assistant Secretary for Arms Control, Verification and Compliance Frank A. Rose.

Vinh praised the US’s role in the region and said Vietnam wanted to cooperate with the US on the basis of respecting the UN Charter, international law, the political regime, independence, sovereignty and the territorial integrity of each country. Vinh appreciated the US’s partial removal of its embargo on lethal weapons to Vietnam. The Deputy Defense Minister expressed his hope that the US will fully lift its embargo on weapons to contribute to the Vietnam-US Comprehensive Partnership. Vinh proposed the two sides further promote bilateral defense ties in the spirit of the Comprehensive Partnership established by the two countries’ leaders in 2013, the Memorandum of Understanding on promoting bilateral defense ties signed in 2011, and the Joint Vision Statement on Defense Relations signed in 2015. Frank Rose promised to do his utmost to encourage the two countries’ military forces to boost cooperation under the memorandum of understanding and a joint vision statement on defense cooperation.
