Vietnam values UN role in peacekeeping, sustainable development

(VOVWORLD) - Vietnam appreciates the role of the UN, a centre for coordinating countries’ joint actions and international efforts to ensure peace and promote sustainable development, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh said at the ASEAN-UN Ministerial Meeting on Wednesday.

Representing Vietnam, ASEAN’s Chair this year, he briefed UN officials on ASEAN’s efforts, build the ASEAN community while curbing COVID-19 in a “Cohesive and Responsive” spirit.

The meeting discussed women’s empowerment, security, sub-region cooperation, and measures to narrow the development gap.

Mr. Minh reaffirmed ASEAN's consistent stance, confirmed at ASEAN Summit 36 in June and ASEAN Foreign Ministers Meeting 53 in September of avoiding actions that might escalate tensions, no militarization, settlement of disputes by peaceful measures in accordance with international law, including the 1982 UNCLOS, and commitment to fully and effectively carrying out the DOC and continuing efforts to reach an effective COC that conforms to international law, including the 1982 UNCLOS.

Vietnam also informed meeting participants about preparations for the 11th ASEAN-UN Summit this November and promised to organize a successful event.
