Vietnamese leaders receive Singaporean President

(VOVWORLD) - Vietnam attaches great importance to its strategic partnership with Singapore and the two countries should further promote cooperation by increasing the exchange of visits and meetings at all levels and through all channels, said Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong at a reception in Hanoi on Monday for Singaporean President Halimah Yacob, who is on a five-day state visit to Vietnam.

Mr. Trong said that the visit is vivid manifestation of the good friendship and cooperation between Vietnam and Singapore, marking a new milestone in the relationship between the two countries as they will celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations and 10 years of strategic partnership in 2023.

The Singaporean President congratulated Vietnam on its successes in socio-economic development, overcoming difficulties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and maintaining high economic growth. She affirmed that Singapore always attaches great importance to developing relations with Vietnam, suggesting that the two sides work closely to make bilateral relations a model of cooperation among ASEAN member countries.

Meeting with President Yacob the same day, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh proposed that the two countries should develop a Digital Economy - Green Economy Partnership.

The Singaporean President said that Singapore will continue to share management experience and support Vietnam to build a digital platform, promote digital transformation, and train high-quality human resources. 

The leaders agreed to continue working closely to consolidate solidarity and the central role of ASEAN and maintain the grouping's common position on the East Sea issue.

During a meeting with the Singaporean President, National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue congratulated Singapore on its success in COVID-19 containment and post-pandemic economic recovery, with its GDP up 4.4% in the second quarter of this year.

He said he hopes that Singapore would develop further, consolidate its role as an economic centre of ASEAN, and complete its Green Plan 2030.

The two leaders shared a view that bilateral economic, trade and investment ties are thriving, with two-way trade tripling over the past 25 years. Singapore has remained Vietnam’s biggest investor in ASEAN.
