Vietnam’s bid for UNSC’s non-permanent seat receives international support
(VOVWORLD) - Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy, Deputy Foreign Minister and Head of Vietnam’s permanent mission to the UN, said Vietnam has gained major support from countries in its bid for a non-permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council for the 2020-2021 term.
The Ambassador said that over 120 countries have shown their support for Vietnam in writing, while up to 40 others have made oral commitments. The UN Security Council’s Voting Procedure stipulates that non-permanent members of the Security Council are elected by a two-thirds majority. Therefore, Vietnam has a big opportunity to be successful at the poll to be held at the UN General Assembly’s 73rd session on June 7.
Swedish Ambassador Olof Skoog, Head of the Swedish mission at the Security Council, has told the press that Vietnam has favorable position to serve as a non-permanent member in the Council thanks to its well respected history and endeavor for peace as well as its understanding of dispute settlement through diplomatic means.
UN columnist George Alan Baumgarten has voiced his support for Vietnam’s non-permanent membership at the Council and expected Vietnam’s further contribution to the settlement of conflicts and disputes in Africa and the Middle East.
