Vietnam’s talented physicist Nguyen Van Hieu passes away

(VOVWORLD) - Professor, Academician Nguyen Van Hieu, former director of the Vietnam Academy of Science, now the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, died on Sunday at the Viet Xo Friendship Hospital, at the age of 84.

Nguyen Van Hieu was born on July 21, 1938 in Cau Do, now Ha Cau ward, Ha Dong district, Hanoi. He was awarded the rank of Academician by the Academy of Sciences of the Soviet Union and Fellow of the Third World Academy of Sciences. He was a National Assembly deputy for multiple terms.

He was awarded Lenin Prize for Science and Technology in 1986, Ho Chi Minh Prize in Science and Technology in 1996, the President’s Independence Order, first class in 2009, and the title of People's Teacher in 2010.

He was one of the first people to lay the foundation for Vietnam's space science and technology.
