Vi-Giam singing receives UNESCO certification as intangible cultural heritage of humanity
(VOVwotrld) – Vi-Giam folk singing received the UNESCO certification as a humanity’s intangible cultural heritage at a program held Saturday in the central provinces of Nghe An and Ha Tinh. The folk singing was officially recognized by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity at the 9
th session of its Inter-governmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in Paris in late November.

The folk music is a repartee singing while working. It reflects the work, cultural life and feelings of the residents in the central coastal provinces. It is popular in nearly 260 villages in the central provinces of Nghe An and Ha Tinh. The two provinces have 51 singing clubs with over 800 vocalists. Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam spoke at the event:
"Let’s join hands to preserve and develop invaluable heritages of the world including Vi-Giam folk singing as part of efforts to protect and promote the Vietnamese culture around the world. A well-preserved cultural foundation would significantly contribute to our national construction and defense."
UNESCO Representative in Viet Nam, Dr. Katherine Muller-Marin, said Vi-Giam folk singing has satisfied all 5 criteria to be recognized as an intangible heritage of humanity. UNESCO hopes that local authorities and people of Nghe An and Ha Tinh province will have appropriate measures to protect and promote the heritage.
On this occasion, Minister of Culture, Sports, and Tourism Hoang Tuan Anh announced a national action program to preserve the folk singing.
