The World Bank will provide 449 million USD to Vietnam’s project to provide electricity to users across the country with better quality and more reliable service, and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through efficiency improvements. Van Tien Hung, senior energy specialist and team leader for the project, says that the 800 million USD project will improve the reliability of energy supplied to industries and households and contribute to Vietnam’s socio-economic development. He added that reliable electricity will reduce the need for alternative polluting fuels like coal and kerosene. The project will help achieve the objectives of the national energy development strategy to 2020 by reducing investment needs in the power sector, strengthening energy security, and contributing to climate change mitigation.
