Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on Sunday posted on X (formerly Twitter), "The decimation of the Gaza health system is a tragedy," as ambulances cannot reach hospitals and doctors and nurses are facing difficulty in treating those injured by the conflict.

"In the face of constant insecurity and inflows of wounded patients, we see doctors, nurses, ambulance drivers and more continue striving to save lives," Tedros said.

Of Gaza’s original 36 hospitals, only 9 are now partially functional. All of them are in the south and all of them are overwhelmed.

He called on the conflicting parties to impose an immediate cease fire and warned of a serious deterioration in the situation in health care facilities in Gaza since the outbreak of the conflict between Hamas and Israel on October 7.

The conflict has killed 20,400 people, mainly women and children. Israel has recorded 1,140 deaths.
