WHO: COVID-19 infections in Middle East surge due to Delta variant

(VOVWORLD) - The World Health Organization (WHO) said Thursday that the Delta variant of the coronavirus has now triggered a fourth wave of the pandemic in the Middle East, which has a low rate of vaccination.

The Delta variant of the coronavirus has now been reported in 15 out of 22 countries in the Middle East, from Morocco to Pakistan.

A statement issued by the WHO media centre read that new cases and deaths in June increased 55% and 15% compared to the previous month. Over 310,000 new cases and 3,500 deaths had been reported on average on a weekly basis.
