The global average surface air temperature of 17.09 degrees Celsius last Sunday was slightly higher than the previous record of 17.08 degrees Celsius measured on July 6, 2023.

Heat waves are now scorching large areas in the US, Europe, and Russia. The record added to a streak of unprecedented global heat observed over the past 13 months.

Due to climate change and El Nino, some scientists believe this year might be the hottest year in history.
