The Youth Union of Lam Thuong commune in Luc Yen district managed to raise nearly 13,000 USD to install a lighting system along 16 kilometers of 7 roads connecting local hamlets.

Hoang Thi Det, Secretary of the Lam Thuong Youth Union, said they are mobilizing more money to light up another two hamlets in the area.

“We are considering a number of factors, including the length of the roads, the number of bulbs, and power poles, and the estimated cost for installing the lighting system in Nam Chan hamlet, especially as the hamlet is planning to develop tourism,” said Det.

The Youth Union also encouraged organizations and local people to contribute to the program. Last year alone, under the Youth Union program, 38 rural roads covering 55 kilometers in Luc Yen district were lit up.

Nong Thanh Son, Secretary of the district’s Youth Union, said members have spent nearly 1,000 days working and raising more than 30,000 USD from local people, businesses, and other individuals for the program.

“We cooperated with the local authorities to carry out this program. After finishing the installation, the hamlets themselves will take over and be responsible for maintaining the system. In the coming time, we will install the lighting systems in other communities where there are many poor and disadvantaged households,” said Son.

The installation of the lighting and camera systems on rural roads has helped ensure security and traffic safety in Luc Yen district and many other areas in Yen Bai province.

“Thanks to the lighting system, the security and order in the locality have improved, crime rates and traffic accidents have dropped. The model combining the lighting system and camera system has helped the local police a lot,” said Major Nguyen Cao Cuong, Deputy Chief of Luc Yen district’s Police.

The “lighting up rural roads” program by the local Youth Union also contributes to the target of fulfilling the new rural development program in Yen Bai province by 2025.
