“The Hill” on Sunday ran a front-page story under the headline “Obama arrives in Vietnam for historic trip”, which said the President will meet with President Tran Dai Quang, National Assenmbly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc and General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong. The US’s NBC and Fox News highlighted Obama’s commitment to rebalancing America’s foreign policy toward Asia Pacific, specifically in economics, trade, security, and tackling climate change. NBC said the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement and lifting an embargo on weapon sales to Vietnam would be the focus of Mr. Obama’s visit.
In a story on Sunday, The Wall Street Journal called Obama’s visit to Vietnam “ historic ” and said it will open a new chapter in the two nation’s bilateral ties and potentially deepen the Vietnam – US relationship. The Washington Post noted that the US President’s visit to Vietnam reflects a new step in bilateral relations.
CNN said President Obama’s visit to Vietnam will be an opportunity to start a new chapter in bilateral ties. Reuters reported that Barack Obama is the third US president to visit Vietnam since the normalization of Vietnam-US ties in 1995.
Argentina’s news agency, Telam, reported US President Barack Obama’s visit to Vietnam to enhance economic and military cooperation. Telam said Obama is the 3rd American President to visit Vietnam following Bill Clinton and George Bush since the war ended in 1975. During his 3-day visit to Vietnam, Obama will hold talks with Vietnam’s leaders and visit Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh city.
Clarin, the biggest newspaper in Argentina, reports that President Obama arrived in Noi Bai airport to begin the official visit on May 23. The newspaper comments that Obama’s visit will positively impact trade and military relations. The La Repubblica daily of Italy covers progress in Vietnam-US trade and investment cooperation. It said Vietnam-US relations have been much improved.
