Vietnam calls for further international assistance to clear bombs and mines

(VOVworld) – Vietnam was reunited in 1975 but 20% of its land, equivalent to 6.6 hectares, was contaminated with bombs and mines left from the war. In Geneva, Pham Quoc Tru, Deputy head of the Vietnamese Permanent Mission to the UN, the WTO and other international organizations, said thanks to international assistance and cooperation with non-governmental organizations, the country has detected and cleared approximately 4% of the contaminated areas.

Concerning Vietnam’s role in the Conference on Disarmament, Tru said as a member of the Conference since 1996, Vietnam has actively participated in all activities and discussions of this forum. Vietnam has clearly voiced its stance and view points on disarmament, peace and security keeping as well as other issues of concern at the Conference. Activities of the Vietnamese Delegation at the Conference have helped elevate the country’s image and consolidate relations with other countries.
