Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh delivered a speech at the 71st session of the UN General Assembly in New York

Minh highlighted the trends of renovation and economic restructuring in various countries saying the internationalization  is creating opportunities to boost regional and global connection. He expressed concern about the slow recovery of the world economy, increasing protectionism, and challenges concerning food security, water resource security, natural resources, climate change, natural disasters, and epidemics. In addition, increasing conflicts and terrorism, the use of force or threat to use force are threatening world peace and security. Minh said:"Multilateral solutions to common challenges have proven to be the most effective and long lasting since no country, large or small, rich or poor, can afford these challenges alone. Multilateral institutions also help countries to promote their interests, effectively manage disputes and differences, and expand their development opportunities. This is why Vietnam believes that multilateralism  must be strengthened and the operation of multilateral institutions, particularly the UN must be improved"

The Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister said Vietnam is committed to fulfilling Sustainable Development Goals and called on developed countries to support developing countries including Vietnam. Minh announced Vietnam’s bid to become a non-Permanent Member of the UN Security Council in the 2020-2021 term and strengthened participation in UN peacekeeping missions.
