Vietnam strengthens fight against corruption

(VOVWORLD) - Since the 13th National Party Congress, Vietnam's fight against corruption and negativity has achieved several outstanding results, becoming an irreversible trend. Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, who is Head of the Central Steering Committee on Anti-Corruption and Negativity, chaired a meeting on Wednesday to launch important tasks of the Steering Committee, affirming Vietnam’s determination to fight corruption and negativity.

2022 marked an important milestone in realizing the Resolution of the 13th National Party Congress. 63 Provincial Steering Committees on Anti-Corruption and Negativity were established. Over the past year, the Provincial Steering Committees have been operating effectively and in an orderly manner, and anti-corruption work has gained noticeable changes.

Effective performance of the Provincial Steering Committees

On November 4, 2022, the Investigation Police Agency of the Thanh Hoa provincial Police Department prosecuted and detained Cam Ba Xuan, Vice Chairman of the Thanh Hoa provincial Farmers' Association, for "abusing position and authority while on duty”.

In the case of the Hac Thanh Tower Project, two officials, Nguyen Ba Hung, former Secretary of Nhu Xuan district’s Party Committee and Dinh Cam Van, former Director of Thanh Hoa province's Department of Finance, were also prosecuted for "abusing position and authority while on duty".

These are just two of many cases with signs of corruption in Thanh Hoa province that have been handled by law. Deputy Head of Thanh Hoa province's Steering Committee for Anti-corruption and Negativity, Nguyen Ngoc Tien, said: “Over the past year, Thanh Hoa province’s Steering Committee for Anti-Corruption and Negativity has closely watched 15 cases with signs of corruption. The Steering Committee organizes regular and extraordinary meetings with functional agencies to push ahead with investigation and prosecution and enhance collaboration to resolve difficulties.”

Hanoi’s Steering Committee on Anti-Corruption and Negativity has handled 60 serious and complicated corruption and negative cases, which draw public concern. Secretary of Hanoi’s Party Committee and Head of the Municipal Steering Committee on Anti-Corruption and Negativity, Dinh Tien Dung, said: “In the first quarter of this year, the Steering Committee has discovered and overseen 24 cases at Motor Vehicle Registration Centers in Hanoi. The Municipal Party Committee has directed agencies to enhance the progress of handling cases according to the conclusion and recommendations of the working group of the Central Committee’s Steering Committee on Anti-corruption and Negativity.”

Functional agencies of Dong Nai province prosecuted 16 cases last year and are investigating 22 additional cases. Nguyen Hong Linh, Secretary of the provincial Party Committee and Head of the provincial Steering Committee on Anti-Corruption and Negativity, said: “Dong Nai province is working on 34 cases, including 22 cases handled by the provincial Steering Committee and 3 cases handled by the National Steering Committee. All cases have been made public so that the people can understand the truth of each case and the ways to handle them.”

Anti-corruption milestones

At a recent conference to review the performance of the Provincial Steering Committee on Anti-Corruption and Negativity, Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong said since their establishment a year ago, the Provincial Steering Committees have worked hard to create visible changes in detecting and dealing with corruption and negativity in the locality.

They have directly conducted 150 inspections and supervisions, discovered a number of violations, and proposed ways to handle many Party organizations and Party members for corruption.

Localities across the country have prosecuted 530 cases and 1,858 defendants for corruption, an increase of 1.5 folds for the number of cases and 800 defendants more than in 2021.

Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong said: “The results of detecting and dealing with corruption and negativity in localities have changed markedly since the Provincial Steering Committees came into operation. The number of corruption and negative cases discovered and prosecuted has increased. The number of serious and complicated cases and the number of officials, leaders, and managers, both incumbent and retired, that have been detected and handled, is also higher. There is no longer a case of "safe retirement" as before, which reflects the resolve in fighting corruption at all levels. This is also the most convincing reflection of the performance of the Provincial Steering Committees.”

The visible results in the fight against corruption and negativity in Hanoi, Thanh Hoa province, and many other localities throughout the country are concrete evidence of the importance of the Provincial Steering Committees on Anti-Corruption and Negativity, which will help strengthen Vietnam's fight against corruption and accomplish the goals set out in the Resolution of the 13th National Party Congress.
