Giao Bay, the fondness-for-learning village in Ca Mau province

(VOVWORLD) - Khanh Binh Tay Bac Commune in Ca Mau province is called "Xom Hue" due to its learning tradition. Many local families are migrants from Hue city and other parts of the central region which is famous in Vietnam for its fondness-for-learning spirit. They are hard-working, follow tradition, and heavily invest in their children's education.

Truong Thanh Bang’s family in Mui Tram B hamlet has a good academic reputation. Bang has five children. Except for the third girl who couldn’t complete secondary school due to an injury, all have completed their studies and found good jobs.

Bang said his parents are Quang Nam natives. In 1961 his family moved to the buffer zone of U Minh Ha forest and settled down there. During the war, the locals built thatched huts where the children could learn to read, Bang recalled.

Whenever those schools were destroyed by bombs, they were immediately rebuilt with cajuput trees and coconut leaves from the U Minh Ha Forest. This motivated Bang to make sure his children got an education.

Bang recalled: “At that time my family was very poor. My father told me to do my best to ensure my children would go to school instead of becoming manual laborers. I became determined to see that my children attended school.”

Nguyen Thanh Trong’s family is one of 55 families from Quang Nam who have settled in Mũi Tràm B hamlet. Trong says that at first his family only harvested one rice crop per a year. Whenever they had a bumper crop, the harvested rice was divided into two parts – one part for the family to live on until the next harvest and the rest to be sold to pay for the children’s schooling.

His wife tried her hand at everything to help pay for the schooling. Now all Trong’s children have in full-time employment as local officials.

Trong told VOV: “I have twin grandchildren who are in the 10th grade. They are hard-working and obedient. I encourage my children to work hard to pay for the grandchildren’s schooling as a family tradition.”

"Xom Hue" has sent many students to universities and colleges. Some have completed master and doctoral degrees and achieved great career success.

Bui Chi Ngan, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Khanh Binh Tay Bac Commune, said: “Mui Tram B is a typical hamlet in our commune’s learning encouragement movement. Many local families have heavily invested in their children’s education. This pro-education movement is widespread throughout the commune.”
