With over 1 million km2 of sea and continental shelf, more than 3,260km of coastline and nearly 4,000 archipelagos and islands, Vietnam has great potential for a marine-based economy. From this, the Government announced a resolution on a strategy for marine economy development to 2020 in which marine economy is defied as one of the five breakthroughs for economic growth. Vietnam’s marine economy is targeted to reach 53 to 55 percent of GDP by 2020 and to comprise more than 60 percent of the country’s export turnover.

Vietnam is initiating its exploitation of the sea potentials, distinguishing itself will be a useful lever to promote a marine economy. Nguyen Chu Hoi, Deputy Chief of Vietnam Islands and Sea Department said the Department is taking into consideration necessary steps to build Vietnam’s marine trademark: "Marine trademark is the trademarks for the economy, for marine companies and marine products. We have designed logos for marine trademarks and blue certificates for marine companies to protect environmental resources for sustainable development. Moreover, it is necessary to closely examine marine activities. The final target is to turn seas resources into assets".

Vietnam’s marine trademark illustrates the harmony between human and sea benefits, as well as images of the seas and islands. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has also submitted to the Government many regulations on development and protection of marine resources. Nguyen Chu Hoi said beside developing the trademark, it is essential to arrange a space for marine economic development: "We have to identify key economic zones for marine economic development which means we have to reorganize the space for a marine economy. Economic development is central to security, national defence, marine resources and environment. The Department of Vietnam’s Islands and Sea is engaged in space planning as a reference for marine economic sectors".
