ASEAN is finalizing activities to form the ASEAN Community on December 31, 2015, and prepare for the post-2015 period. Rapid global and regional changes have created opportunities and challenges for ASEAN.

ASEAN 27: an important event in ASEAN’s history

The ASEAN 27 is seen as a historic milestone because leaders of the 10 ASEAN members will sign the Declaration on the formation of the ASEAN Community 2015 and the Declaration on ASEAN Community Vision 2025: Steadily advancing.

By signing the Declaration on the formation of the ASEAN Community, ASEAN leaders will give birth to the ASEAN community, the end result of tireless efforts by ASEAN countries over the past 5 decades. Starting as a loose cooperative association, ASEAN has become a united, deeply cooperative community, playing an important role in regional peace, stability, and prosperity, and a partner of the world’s largest countries and international organizations.

The ASEAN leaders will sign a Declaration on the ASEAN Community Vision 2025 to affirm their determination and commitment to reinforce and deepen ASEAN cooperation in the next decade. They will adopt plans to realize the ASEAN Community Vision 2025 vision based on three pillars: politics-security, economics, and culture-society. This is a key document identifying the foundation, framework, and orientation of the ASEAN coalition in the next decade. ASEAN Secretary General Le Luong Minh said: “The focus of the 2025 Vision is to continue implementing sustainable policies and measures to narrow development gaps among ASEAN countries. ASEAN’s vision is to build a community for the people and by the people with the principle of consulting public opinions on all policies and enforcement, particularly policies on resilient growth.”

The establishment of the ASEAN Community is the result of a long process and the beginning of a new period. The signing of the two Declarations will be witnessed by leaders of ASEAN partners, dialogue countries, and the UN Secretary General.

Vietnam will contribute to ASEAN summit’s success

2015 will witness a historic turn in the development of ASEAN. The formation of the ASEAN Community coincides with the 20th anniversary of Vietnam’s ASEAN membership. Vietnam will continue to responsibly participate in obtaining consensus, unity, and solidarity in ASEAN. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh says: “As an active member of ASEAN, Vietnam puts forward initiatives to build trust and make ASEAN standards regional standards, aiming to build a peaceful and stable region after 2015.”

The success of the 27th ASEAN summit is of great significance to its members with the formation of the ASEAN Community.
