Mid-term census to provide basis for development strategies

(VOVWORLD) - Vietnam began a mid-term population and housing census in all 63 provinces and cities on Monday. The results of the census, which will be completed by April 30, will provide data for evaluating population development over the past 5 years and set population and housing policies for the future.

This mid-term population and housing census is one of 45 surveys and national statistical censuses announced in the Prime Minister’s Decision No. 3 in February last year.

Foundation for evaluating implementation of development plan

The 2024 census falls halfway between the 2019 and 2029 population and housing censuses. The data it collects will provide a basis for evaluating the implementation of the 2021-2025 socio-economic development plan and for setting policy to realize the 2026-2030 plan. The census will also help supervise implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals and update district level data on population size gathered during the 2019 population and housing census.

Vu Thi Thu Thuy, Director of the Department of Statistical Data Collection and Information Technology Application of the General Statistics Office, said: "The survey will provide detailed data about the population and population quality to serve the assessment and development of policies for future socio-economic development. The 2019 population census provided very important data for socio-economic development and made recommendations to ensure gender balance and socio-economic development based on a golden population."

Data on foreigners in Vietnam will be collected

For the first time, the population and housing census will collect information about foreigners living in Vietnam. Cao Van Hoach, Deputy Director of the Department of Statistical Data Collection and Information Technology Application, said the data will serve as a foundation for crafting appropriate policies to create conditions for foreigners, an important resource for the country.

Data on foreigners’ gender, age, nationality, place of birth, and travel status will be collected directly (via interpreter) and indirectly (through questionnaires written in English, French, Russian, Chinese, Korean, and Japanese).

The 2019 census revealed that Vietnam's total population was more than 96 million with a golden population structure. But the country is now rapidly moving toward an aging population.

The results of the 2024 midterm population and housing census will be announced in December this year.
