Outcomes of President Truong Tan Sang’s overseas tour

(VOVworld) – President Truong Tan Sang has concluded visits to Tanzania, Mozambique, and Iran. His visits were instrumental in deepening Vietnam’s relations with the three countries.

President Truong Tan Sang’s visits to Tanzania, Mozambique, and Iran had a profound political importance, illustrating a friendly relationship and generating new momentum for Vietnam’s economic and trade ties with these countries.

Outcomes of the visits

Tanzania, Mozambique, and Iran prepared a solemn reception for the Vietnamese delegation. During their meetings, President Truong Tan Sang and the leaders of Tanzania, Mozambique, and Iran pledged to nurture their traditional friendly relationship as a precious asset. After reviewing their trade ties, they agreed to fully tap cooperative potentials in the future. The leaders reached consensus on the highest priority sectors and measures for enhancing bilateral economic and trade relations.

Vietnam pledges to raise its trade with Tanzania to 1 billion USD, with Mozambique to 500 million USD, and with Iran to 2 billion USD by 2020. Vietnamese companies will increase exports of rice, farm produce, seafood, garments, and footwear, and imports of cashew nuts, animal feed, cotton, scrap metal, wood furniture, fertilizer, plastic materials, and equipment. The leaders underscored the role of Intergovernmental Committees and asked them to set specific cooperative orientations. They agreed to support each other’s representatives at regional and intergovernmental forums. Tanzania, Mozambique, and Iran committed to back Vietnam’s nomination as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council in the 2020-2021 term and the International Law Committee in the 2017-2021 term.

President Sang and the state leaders discussed regional and global issues including territorial disputes in the East Sea. They shared a view that sovereignty disputes threaten regional peace and stability. They strongly advocated resolving disputes by peaceful measures through dialogue based on international law and the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.

Establishing a new platform for relations in the new period

During President Sang’s visits, several cooperative agreements were signed on education, banking, and petroleum. Tanzania and Mozambique issued joint statements on the outcomes of the visits and political principles for bilateral cooperation in the new period.

Business forums were held in each country attracting a large number of local businesses. They showed interest in Vietnam’s export staples such as food, footwear, garments, textiles, electronic devices, and agricultural products. Vietnamese businesses have seen business opportunities in these countries in agricultural production, aquaculture, petroleum, and telecommunications.

President Truong Tan Sang’s visits to Tanzania, Mozambique, and Iran have affirmed Vietnam’s external policy of strengthening traditional relations and diversifying international relationships.
