Vietnam’s increased presence in global semiconductor supply chain

(VOVWORLD) -Vietnam is strengthening international cooperation and increasing its presence at major international events. This effort is realizing the Politburo’s Resolution 57 on science, technology, innovation, and digital transformation with a focus on cooperation with developed countries in the semiconductor industry.

Last week, Vietnam participated in the SEMICON Southeast Asia Expo in Singapore, the region’s largest annual semiconductor exhibition. The 30th edition of SEMICON Expo drew 500 companies, showcased 1,300 booths, and attracted 20,000 visitors from 65 countries and territories.

The Vietnamese delegation included representatives from Vietnamese companies, organizations, institutes, and universities involved in semiconductors, electronics, AI, and high-tech. Vo Xuan Hoai, Deputy Director of Vietnam’s National Innovation Center, said this is a milestone for Vietnam to promote its potential and advantages in the global semiconductor and electronics supply chain.

According to Hoai, Vietnam's strength lies in its abundant skilled workforce, its stable political environment, and its strong relations with nations with advanced semiconductor industries like the US, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan (China), and several European countries. “These advantages position Vietnam well to participate in the global semiconductor value chain,” Hoai concluded.

At this year’s SEMICON Expo, Vietnam’s tech firms showcased semiconductor ecosystem, fostered international partnerships, and attracted investment in strategic industries.

Mai Lan Anh, Head of Public Relations and External Communications for FPT, said, “FPT is driving innovation in AI and semiconductor design through the building of AI factories in Vietnam and Japan together with Nvidia.”

FPT has integrated AI into over 200 products and formed strategic partnerships with leading names like Nvidia, Microsoft, and Mila-Quebec Institute, Lan Anh told VOV, adding, “FPT Jetking, a collaboration with India’s Jetking Institute, is launching a semiconductor design program to support Vietnam's growing appeal to international investors like Samsung, Qualcomm, and Amkor.”

Amid the semiconductor value chain’s shift toward Southeast Asian countries, Vietnam is considered to have all the conditions and factors needed to develop a semiconductor industry – a stable political environment, a favorable geographical location, abundant raw materials, a strong technical workforce, and rapidly advancing digital infrastructure.

Strengthening cooperation with developed countries and directly engaging with enterprises, factories, research centers, and universities in semiconductors and AI offer valuable opportunities for Vietnam to learn from advanced industrial development models.

Christopher Nguyen, CEO and founder of the US software company Aitomatic, said, “Vietnam is at a critical turning point where it's moving from being a pure technology adopter to a technology innovator, so the world is watching to see whether it can make that leap.”

“Vietnam has a very large solid pool that could become experts in AI and semiconductors. And Vietnam is benefiting greatly from the strategic supply chain shift. A third key factor, of course, is policy and industry momentum. There's a strong alignment now between government initiatives and R&D investments,” Nguyen added.

Developing and applying technology to build an innovation ecosystem in AI and semiconductors is a goal set out in Resolution 57. Increasing its presence at major international technology events is a move to open up new opportunities and position Vietnam as a link in the global semiconductor ecosystem.
