The project, over 100 km long and with a voltage of 110kV, uses a hybrid structure and is the first of its kind built in Vietnam to transmit electricity across the sea from the mainland to the island.

The project was put into operation in September 2025, and within just a few months, islanders have seen the effectiveness of grid electricity replacing electricity from diesel generators.

“Before the national power grid reached Con Dao, using generators was very inconvenient for the residents. The power supply, especially during peak tourist season, was almost insufficient, and businesses had to use additional generators to supplement their electricity. Now, with the stable power supply, Con Dao islanders are very happy,” according to Ms. Bui Thi Phuong, Head of Residential Area No. 7.

Tourism businesses are seeing even clearer benefits. Tran Duy Hien, Director of Marina Bay Con Dao Hotel, said, “When connected to the national power grid, the power system operates more stably, with fewer outages during the day. A stable power grid supports better infrastructure development. Previously, tourism businesses could only serve the basic needs of guests, but now they can confidently offer higher-quality services. As Con Dao is developing green tourism, generators are not used anymore, resulting in lower emissions.”

According to Ho Chi Minh City's planning, Con Dao will be developed in a "green and smart" direction with prioritized environmentally friendly tourism projects. The Con Dao Special Economic Zone is also set to transition to electric transportation, starting with electric buses, and aims to replace gasoline-powered vehicles with electric ones by 2028.
