102 dead, 26 missing in floods, landslides in central Vietnam

(VOVWORLD) - The number of deaths caused by flooding and landslides in central Vietnam rose to 102 on Monday, with 26 still missing, according to the Central Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control.

Provinces affected by floods and landslides include Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Thua Thien Hue, Da Nang, and Quang Nam.  

Four landslides occurred in Thua Thien-Hue and Quang Tri, claiming the lives of dozens of residents and soldiers. Some 70,000 people were evacuated.  Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc directed localities to mitigate the consequences of flooding and inspected rescue efforts in Military Region 4. Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung visited other localities to inspect search and rescue efforts in response to flooding and landslides. 

The Government, ministries, sectors, localities, and domestic and foreign organizations have provided support to the affected localities. The Central Standing Committee of the Vietnamese Fatherland Front pledged more than 860,000 USD to support flood victims in the central provinces and building new houses for families whose houses was destroyed or severely damaged.
