2025 Oscar nominations announced: Emilia Pérez dominates

(VOVWORLD) - The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced on Thursday the nominations for the 97th Oscars, after multiple delays due to the wildfires that have devastated parts of Los Angeles.

Jacques Audiard’s “Emilia Pérez,” a Spanish-language, French-made film dominated with 13 nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actress for Karla Sofía Gascón, making her the first openly trans actor ever nominated for an Oscar.

The film also landed nominations for Director, Original Screenplay, Original Song, and for Zoe Saldaña’s Supporting Actress performance. It also secured a nomination for France in the Best International Feature Film category.

Close behind in nominations was “The Brutalist,” a historical epic about the immigrant experience, and “Wicked,” the screen version of a long-running Broadway sensation, which both nabbed 10 nominations.

“Conclave,” a thriller about the election of a new pope, and “A Complete Unknown,” a look at Bob Dylan’s early, freewheelin’ years, each had 8 nominations.

All five of those films are up for Best Picture alongside indie pictures “Anora,” “Nickel Boys,” and “I’m Still Here,” the horror film “The Substance,” and “Dune: Part Two.”

In the acting categories, Sebastian Stan earned a Best Actor nomination for his portrayal of a young Donald Trump in the movie The Apprentice which also got a Best Supporting Actor nod for Jeremy Strong.

Demi Moore, one of Hollywood’s brightest stars in the 1990s, continued her career comeback by receiving a Best Actress nomination for “The Substance.” Timothée Chalamet triggered Best Actor Oscar buzz with his performance in "A Complete Unknown.”

The 97th Academy Awards ceremony will take place as scheduled on March 2, 2025, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. This year’s event will feature significant changes in format to match the circumstances and honor those who worked tirelessly to prevent or mitigate the damage caused by the recent wildfires.
