Speaking on behalf of ASEAN at an Open Debate of the UN Security Council on “Regional organisations and contemporary challenges of global security,” Nga said international organisations play a key role in maintaining peace and security and that ASEAN has been working with its partners to develop a mechanism for conflict avoidance and peaceful dispute settlement, including a Code of Conduct in the East Sea (COC).
Ambassador Nga said ASEAN always wants to strengthen its ties with the UN in peace-keeping operations and promote ASEAN-UN comprehensive partnership and co-operation between the two organisations’ secretariats.
She reiterated that the best way to address new challenges is to build consensus, respect all parties’ viewpoints, and abide by fundamental principles of international law, including respecting sovereignty and territorial integrity, not interfering in internal affairs, and settling disputes through peaceful means.
