After Luc Ngan litchi, Binh Thuan dragon fruit is the second geographical indication of Vietnam protected in Japan.

Mr. Van Cong Thoi, Director of Binh Thuan Provincial Department of Science and Technology, said the certificate protects trademark of agricultural products in foreign markets, marking an important milestone in the process of selling dragon fruit in Japan and paving the way for the geographical indication protection of other agricultural products of Vietnam in this market.

PGI status identifies an agricultural product, raw or processed, of which the quality, reputation or other characteristics are linked to its geographical origin. The PGI applies to agricultural, agro-food and wine products.

Currently, there are 39 geographical indications of Vietnam recognized by the European Union within the framework of Free Trade Agreements. Among them are Phu Quoc fish sauce, Phan Thiet fish sauce, Lang Son star anise, Buon Ma Thuot coffee, Bac Giang lychee, and San Tuyet Moc Chau tea.
