Wang made the statements during a phone conversation with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Monday. The phone call took place as both sides prepared for a planned meeting between President Xi and President Trump on the sidelines of the APEC Summit in South Korea this week.
Wang said the talks clarified each side’s position and improved understanding. He added that relations could progress if both countries resolve issues through dialogue and avoid unilateral pressure.
The Chinese Embassy in Washington said on social media platform X that China-US relations can remain stable and grow if both sides follow the key agreements reached by their leaders, uphold equality, respect, and mutual benefit, and resolve differences through dialogue instead of pressure or coercion.
President Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One before landing in Tokyo on Monday, “I’ve got a lot of respect for President Xi and I think we’re going to come away with a deal.”
